American Horror Story Asylum – Season Finale

I held off the final two episodes so I could watch them back to back and just finished the season finale of Asylum. I have to say it has been one hell of a roller coaster ride for this season with so many twists and turns that at times it was hard to keep up. When the season first started it was hard to see where they were going with this, and even in the end those opening scenes at the abandoned Briarcliff come across as a little superficial, like there was something more they wanted to do, but the plot was headed a different direction and they didn’t have the time. But overall the show was full of dark humor, tense moments, strange experiments, odd characters and unexpected reactions. There was lots of shock value that’s for sure.

The final episode really was a wrap up, tying up loose ends as quickly as possible, even if they didn’t quite make sense. It seemed the simplest thing to do was go the way of Shakespeare and kill everyone off. I suppose that does follow in the footsteps of the first season, but it seemed a bit forced this time. But then you have to ask, are they really gone or did the "aliens" come to take them back? Was Briarcliff more than a lab for a war criminal? Did he unknowingly share his space with another species? Was this all part of a bigger plan? And what of the devil? Was it really him? Is it really that easy to make him go away? A lot of that seemed like false starts or just misdirection.

And I’m still a bit confused over the opening scene. Was it just random chance that the son of Bloody Face was in there or has he been lying in wait for others to show up so he can attack them? Have there been other unexplained murders at the old asylum? And what about the teens that were there as well? Serial Killers that Bloody Face cut short? That whole sequence seems a little awkward. Perhaps I need to watch it again to see the relevance of it all. Again, it seems like another false start, like there was another story they wanted to follow, but didn’t have the time.

I guess that’s the point of it all, to make you ask more questions than answer, to leave you wanting more. It kept things moving and tense right up to the end, right up to the final shot. I guess Lana is a bit more of a badass than we thought. But did she do it all for the right reasons? Was she seeking justice or cash?

This was a fun series and while of the storylines seem a little out of place it was very enjoyable from start to finish. I have no doubt that the next weekend I’m free, I’ll sit down and watch the whole thing again looking for those clues and little hints of what’s to come.

I can’t imagine what’s coming for season 3. After everything they stuffed into this season they must be wracking their brains to come up with even more diabolical and sinister plot lines.
