When will the Ghost Hunters be exposed?

It seems there’s a lot of evidence mounting that indicates the Ghost Hunters team may be taking some liberties with their investigations. A lot of analysis has been done since Halloween 2008 when Grant was supposedly pulled in all sorts of directions by an unseen force during the live investigation. Since then, many people have gone back to review their footage to see if their claims match the evidence. Some, are even going back to the very first episodes where they claim to have gotten some of their very best evidence.

Further, we have the somewhat vague but interesting comments made by former Ghost Hunters case manager Donna LaCroix. While she didn’t say any faking had taken place, she did make comment about unusual editing, that people need to think for themselves and that everyone is out to stab you in the back. Not exactly the hometown atmosphere you would expect.

It would be naïve to think that there’s not millions riding on the success of Ghost Hunters. With it’s "humble" beginnings as two blue-collar plumbers who investigate the paranormal into the now multiple franchises, with a slew of copycats, there’s big money to be made. And clearly Jason and Grant have made a few dollars along the way since we all know they bought the Spalding Inn together. There’s a lot on the line to keep people watching.

If you go back to those first episodes, Jason disputed just about every piece of evidence and said it would be hard for him to rule something as haunted unless he had conclusive proof. Now? He labels everything as having paranormal activity, skipping the use of the word, "haunted". Is the evidence any more solid? I don’t think it is.

So is the Ghost Hunter franchise taking a few shortcuts to make good television and keep people interested? As they admit, they’re dealing with something that you can’t inherently prove. Can they really be accused of faking something that most people don’t believe in anyway? Are they pulling strings and setting up scenes for the paranormal to appear? Considering the grainy green glow of the camera, how hard is it to trace something that isn’t there or have people fill in the dots to make something appear? People will believe what they want to believe. No one is actually being charged for their services, right?

Did they skip 2009’s Halloween special to let the fervor die down since everyone would be watching with hawk eyes to see if there were any shenanigans and they just didn’t want to risk it?

It seems like calling their evidence into question is not just an isolated incident anymore. Are they walking a very fine line and it’s only a matter of time?

End of the road for the Ghost Hunters

I never seen Ghost Hunters as anything more than entertainment. I never thought for a minute it had any true scientific value. I tuned in because of the interesting places they went. They got to "go behind the scenes" and got full access to places the rest of us wouldn’t be able to go. The idea of investigating a lighthouse in the dead of night, or a battleship or a sanatorium, just sounds like so much fun. How could you not be thrilled to do it?

The show was interesting because of the debunking they would do. I enjoyed the aspect of finding out what could make people think they had a spirit when in fact there were everyday explanations of what people saw, felt and heard. It was pretty obvious the mind was playing tricks and the power of suggestion is pretty powerful.

But now, Jay, Grant and the rest of the team are just too damn lazy to get off the couch to actually do any investigating or debunking for that matter. Do Kris and Amy have chronic fatigue, is that why they’re always sitting down?

And what is with this, "If you make a noise, we’ll leave" crap? If something makes a noise on your command doesn’t that mean you should stick around and check it out? What are you stupids doing?

Steve and Tango were still fun to watch, but even they seem more concerned with being pranksters than focusing on the task at hand. I’m beginning to wonder what kinds of bets they have going when we’re not watching.

Things have been going down hill all year, but the icing on the cake was when they became too involved in their "Inn" to do a Halloween special. This was always their most interesting location, but now they can’t be bothered. Even though the Pro Wrestlers detracted from the show, it was still wildly entertaining and interesting to watch. Now we just get to watch Steve fart on live television. Classy!

Was it the controversy over the jacket pulling incident that made them shy away? It’s been quite awhile since that incident took place, but the more I read about that, the K2 meter and some of the gadgets they use the more far fetched it all seems. Like I said, I never thought they were scientific in their approach, but armed with these hokey devices it just makes the whole experience laughable. And not in a clever, amusing way, but more of a sad and embarrassed way. Some goof builds a device with blinky lights in their basement and Jason and Grant can’t wait to go running around in the dark with it saying how cool it is and how no one else has one.

I’ve been an avid watcher for the past few years, but I’ve missed quite a few episodes this year and to be honest, I just don’t care. My interest is gone. I’ll probably catch up on them at some point, but right now there are a lot of others things I want to watch. This is the last year for me, the show and the crew just don’t interest me any more. I’m more inclined to tune in for Ghost Hunters International (if it ever comes back on) simply because the locations they go to are fascinating. But as for Ghost Hunters itself, this is the end of the road for me. We had a good run together, but I’m just not that into you.

Paranormal Activity – Movie Review

First off, the jittery camera work and swinging camera motions made me somewhat motion sick. About halfway through the movie I felt queasy and light headed. Just fair warning if you’re susceptible to motion sickness you need to prepare yourself.

I went and saw this movie last night and for a low budget film this kicks ass! To get a sense of what you’re in for it’s a movie length episode of Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures. Toss in a little Blair Witch action and you’re good to go.

I won’t go into any of the details of the movie since that would spoil it, but the premise is simple: Micah and Kate are experiencing something odd in their home and Micah goes out and buys a video camera to document what’s going on. He puts the camera on a tripod lets it run through the night. We are watching the footage that has been found after all the events have taken place.

It starts off mostly as a game, Micah wanting to capture something and make his girlfriend feel better about living with him. But something is happening, and the lack of sleep and helplessness starts to take its toll and soon the couple is tired, scared and desperate. They begin to lash out at each other which seems to feed this entity and soon it’s all spiraling out of control.

We’ll leave it there for the details of the movie. Half the experience is seeing it all unfold. I had a great time watching this, despite the motion sickness caused by the jerky camera motions. I’m not thrilled with the ending though, I thought it would have been done better. We won’t go into the details, at least not yet, but I think it went a little too Hollywood and broke with the spirit of the rest of the movie. But that aside this is good stuff and it shows that if you have a worthwhile story you don’t need $100 million in special effects.

If you have any interest in the paranormal, enjoy Ghost Hunters or Ghost Adventures or thought The Blair Witch Project was good then you’ll have a fun time with this one. Lots of bizarre things going on and you’re constantly scanning the screen to see what’s coming.

Definitely worth seeing!

Ghost Hunters Halloween Special 2009

So the big question is, will there even be one? There’s nothing listed on their site and normally at this time of year they’ve selected the haunted location (usually a large location they investigated earlier in the year), the host (Josh Gates who is always amusing), the guest star (no more wrestlers please) and they’re promoting it as much as possible.

But all is quiet in the Ghost Hunters camp. The Halloween Special seems to be its own ghost. From the bits and pieces I’m seeing it looks like Syfy is going to run a Ghost Hunters marathon rather than a live show. What’s the point of a marathon when you replay the episodes on a daily basis and just about everyone has the episodes on DVD?

Have the hijinks and all the backlash and controversy surrounding last year’s live show caused the Ghost Hunters to give up on the idea of a Halloween Special? Or are they just too damn busy promoting their new Inn and Halloween Party to bother with a live broadcast? From the looks of things right now they won’t be joining us for Halloween, unless you’re on their guest list for the party.

Considering the ratings this event draws in, by the guys skipping it, does that indicate the show is in its twilight hours? Are Jason and Grant planning to step aside and let their legacy (not to mention the bankroll) live on within Ghost Hunters International? Are they setting Steve and Tango free to pursue their own TV careers with the launch of Ghost Hunters Academy? Even though the show is supposed to be renewed through 2010 piece appear to be in place for Jason and Grant to bow out of the ghost hunting biz so they can run their hotel and cash in on its possibly haunted ways.

The show has seen a lot of changes over the years, both in personnel and format. Brian, love him or hate him, has been booted off both shows and has since disappeared. Andy took the helm for GHI, but I guess he annoyed the hell out of everyone and they told him to go away. Donna of course had to bail out due to illness. Some of the other investigators they have are just plain annoying (Joe, Kristyn) so I would personally like to see less of them.

The turnover rate is getting pretty high, but the format has changed as well. It used to be the team would investigate from dusk until dawn. Now it seems they can’t be bothered to work through the night and half the time they’re sitting down as though it’s too inconvenient to actually wander around and debunk anything. No need to go toward the noise, just sit where you are and it will come to you.

There are lots of indicators that lead me to believe the show is on its last legs. The excitement and passion seems to be gone. I get the feeling Jason and Grant have made enough money that they want to go off and do other things. While they aren’t charging the client, make no mistake they are making a fortune off this show.

Is the time right for another show to come in and take over the paranormal reigns? Or is the ghost ride over? With so many shows on the air can they no longer compete in the market they basically created? Or are the allegations of trickery getting to be a bit much? Are they tired of the abuse or did they just narrowly escape getting caught? Did the problems all start with that stupid K2 meter?

I get the feeling the Ghost Hunters will soon be disappearing into the shadows themselves.
