Time to start things off with some flaming pumpkins

This is my first batch of the year and I have to say things went quite well. I got some spectacular effects and had a massive 6 foot flame shooting out the top. This one really went off and lasted for nearly an hour. I went all in and bought the expensive mega rolls of toilet paper to stick in there. They claim it’s like 4 rolls all wrapped into one! :) Judging from the burn length, they might be right.

I did make a slight change to the pumpkin burning process and now the pumpkins are nestled in a fire bowl for safe keeping until they meeting their ultimate Halloween destiny. It works really well actually and keeps the home owners association at bay, and that’s really what it’s all about.

So here we go, let the pumpkin burning begin!

Paranormal State comes back for Season 5 on October 17

And it looks like they’re slated for 20 episodes…

Despite my better judgment I’m going to give Paranormal State another chance. I haven’t been too enthusiastic about this show and last season just about drove me away, but I’ll go out on a limb and check out the first couple of episodes to see how they play out. I have to say my expectations are pretty low at this point. If Ryan jumps on the demonic bandwagon again though that’ll be an end to it. If he ends up in another exorcism …

The new season starts in a week so I guess we’ll find out.

Ghost Adventures – Waverly Hills Sanatorium – S04E04

Waverly Hills is perhaps one of the most recognized names when it comes to spirit activity. Countless shows and teams have gone there to investigate. It’s got a long history of death and disease and we’re all familiar with the high death toll, the body chute, the nurse who supposedly hung herself after getting pregnant and the boy who still plays in the halls. Zak, Nick and Aaron take their turn at this massive building to see what kind of evidence they can capture.

Things get moving very quickly with multiple EVPs (or static as I like to call it). They also bring in something new which I believe Aaron called a Rempod. He sets it up in the location where the nurse supposedly committed suicide and within a few seconds it starts going off. Zak is able to ask the entity to move around the room and trigger the device almost at will. Something certainly seems to be there and appears to be communicating with them.

BUT, before we get too excited, let’s take a step back and think about this for a moment. What exactly does this device going off mean? What does it detect? What does it measure? How much is enough to trigger it? What are the baseline readings? Is there any sort of scientific merit to what it’s recording?

Sure, it seems insanely exciting that Zak is talking to an entity with this new device, but I really have to ask what that device does. Why should I believe it? Just saying it detects spirits is not enough to convince me of anything. That device could be remotely triggered off camera. It could be detecting the camera or audio equipment they use. It could be reacting to changes in humidity or temperature for all I know. Setting a box on the floor that lights up and makes noise is certainly theatrical, but unless you provide some details on how the thing works it’s all pretty meaningless.

With that science experiment over the guys move on to the morgue and laboratory. Zak spends some time lying on a slab where he begins to feel lethargic and as though he has people lying on top of him. Is he feeling the spirits of lost souls or is he just getting sleepy because he’s lying down? He is in the dark you know.

Next, they split up and start working their way through the halls. Aaron seems to get some activity going on around him. He basically scares himself to the point of peeing his pants. Are the spirits coming after Aaron because they think he’s bait or is he just scaring himself senseless? He nearly works himself into a panic.

Moving on the guys head out to find "the Creeper", a shadow entity that apparently crawls along the ground and might even crawl across the ceiling. They set up a full spectrum camera and actually capture what appears to be something moving along the wall. Is this the creeper? Is this a patient? Is it one of the nurses? Or could it be a shadow cast from car headlights? Is it something passing in front of the light of the full moon that’s outside? What do we have here?

Zak and the guys pick up dozens of EVPs, but I’ve just come to ignore those. They’ve become meaningless. If people hear words in that mess then good for them. I still think they all sound like static and I certainly don’t hear these big long phrases that Zak supposedly hears.

I was really excited the guys were headed to Waverly Hills since it has such an unusual past and lots of other teams have investigated there. However, I’m not sure the GA team really walked away with much. The place is certainly creepy and makes your hair stand on end, but did they capture solid evidence? For those that love the EVP they got a lot of them. There seemed to be quite a bit going on with the Rempod and the nurse, if you’re willing to believe it. And there seems to be a shadow moving up the hall in the video footage. Some interesting stuff, but truthfully, I found it a little lacking. I’m not sure what I was expecting or hoping for, but I didn’t find this evidence all that compelling. The episode was certainly entertaining, its just that everything seems to hinge on those EVPs and they just don’t sound like anything to me.

The Rempod (or whatever it’s called) seems interesting. I’d like to learn more about that. I can’t find anything on it so far.

Destination Truth – Siberian Snowman – s04e05

Josh and the team head out to Siberia for another in their series of hunting down Bigfoot, this time the Siberian Snowman. The Siberian version is pretty similar to all the other versions, a big, furry, somewhat human looking creature that is exceptionally tall, reclusive and although often seen, is rarely photographed.

The team lands in Red Square where they fulfill Dan’s dream of Break Dancing in Russia. He has some skills too! Well, sort of. I’m sure the locals thought it was great!

They break away and meet with an authority on the Almas who claims they’ve found hundreds of footprints and have dozens of sightings. Alas, there is no photographic evidence of the Snowman running around in the hills.

They head into the high country with the help of plane, train and automobile and end up at the home of someone who’s seen the Almas first hand. But first, they’re offered a sumptuous feast. And not just anything will do for this group, it needs to be horse. And not just any part of the horse, the butt end. In his own words, Josh proves he’s hungry enough to eat a horse.

Their host gives them some details of her encounter and tells them they need to go further up the mountain to find the Snowman. So they rent a military transport and head up the mountain. The road is pretty steep going and soon they have to ditch the truck and go the rest of the way on foot.

On the walk, they get something on the thermal but they aren’t able to catch up with it. They press on and make base camp before heading out into the night.

Things get pretty exciting when Ali, Gabe and Shawn are standing near the mountain side and hear something large moving around and rocks falling. But the way things play out, the team takes off running and we don’t have any idea what was there. Looks like they might have been on to something, but bailed out a little soon.

All is not lost as they come across a tuft of hair tucked away in the foliage.

Meanwhile, Josh, Bobby and Mike come across what appears to be some massive footprints. They follow the trail, but are soon surrounded by wolves. Now is a good time to head back to base camp. Note to self, for a frozen expanse of wilderness with very few people around, there are plenty of wild animals. And no shortage of scares.

With fur ball in hand they head back to the main road and move on to their next location. But first, they need to stop at a local market for some supplies. Supplies include a whip to keep Josh under control, trendy shirts for Mike and Gabe, and a pipe so Dan can solve crimes. The stuff they find in markets is simply amazing, not to mention bizarre.

They meet up with a woman who claims to have seen the Almas while camping. She explains the area is quite rugged and they’ll need different transportation than the 4×4 Mystery Machine. Armed with a tank, yes indeed a real tank, Josh heads up the mountain. I think he needs to keep that tank for future investigations. Well, if he hadn’t broken it. But seriously, a tank!

Their new ride is turned into base camp and the team heads out to find more evidence. Bobby and Shawn find more footprints in the snow while Josh finds more tracks of his own. Josh even find a clearing where something large was laying down or rolling around in the snow. They’re able to find a urine sample and take it back with them.

The perimeter alarm goes off but ultimately they aren’t able to find the cause.

In the end they gather up their evidence and head back to Los Angeles. The fur clump turns out to be from an Ibex which is native to the region. The footprints are from something heavy which more than likely walks upright but they can’t make out much more. Unfortunately, they don’t come up with much to support the idea of a Siberian Snowman. The foot prints are certainly interesting but there’s quite a few animals which could have left those, the most obvious being a bear.

There would be food and water for a creature to live and hide up there, but you would think after all this time they would have found a carcass or some other tangible piece of evidence to it’s existence. Seems to me, like a bear or some other animal has been mistaken as the Snowman. And for the close up encounters it would seem like wolves or something similar would be to blame. Not much evidence here, perhaps he’s hanging out in Florida.
