Paranormal Challenge – Waverly Hills Sanatorium – S01E06

I will admit right off the bat that I think Waverly Hills is one of the creepiest places out there. If the stories are true, it has got to have one of the most overwhelming histories of sadness and death. Thousands of people died from disease. Other died of hopelessness. And still others took their lives out of desperation. To open as a state of the art hospital and then decline into a storage site for those waiting to die is tragic. So if something is out there, if spirits linger in a place of sorrow and misery, this very well could be the place.

For this episode we have the all female team of EPIC Paranormal investigating against the all male team of Dark Alley Paranormal. I was less than impressed with last week’s episode and the teams presented. But these teams actually seem to know what they’re doing. Dark Alley makes some mistakes by standing around and leaning against the walls too much, but each team comes across as well organized, understands how to use the equipment, understands the history and nobody loses any equipment.

As far as evidence goes we have the usual suspects of orbs and some garbled EVPs. Orbs are of little value and the EVPs are pretty useless. The loud bangs that Dark Alley Paranormal hears in the body chute are very interesting. However, are they legitimate bangs being made by spirits or is that just the sound of the building creaking and settling as it cools in the night? Further, could that be some animal digging around and making a burrow? Unfortunately we can’t tell and Dark Alley didn’t run toward the noise to do more investigation.

They also missed an opportunity when they hear loud moans in the building. I agree it was so pronounced it could have been coming from people outside, but they didn’t follow up on it. They didn’t investigate that noise and instead just kept walking. I think that was a terrible mistake. They should have gotten to the bottom of that and at least shown some debunking skills.

As for the ladies of EPIC Paranormal they did some great work with showing empathy to nurse who killed herself, they talked about the procedures and what it might have been like to be a patient there, and they go headlong into the body chute. That was seriously some fearless investigating.

Unlike the other teams there wasn’t any petty arguing and bickering. The teams didn’t seem confused and overwhelmed. In fact they came across as really solid investigators. I hope we see more like them in the future.

Again, the evidence was light, but I think Waverly Hills is the epitome of spooky and I really enjoyed watching these teams investigate this site.

Paranormal Challenge – Western Virginia Penitentiary – S01E05

Zak heads out to West Virginia Penitentiary where Northeastern Spirit Society will compete against West Virginia Paranormal. West Virginia Penitentiary is an incredibly violent place with murder, suicide and riots. Even the Department of Corrections knew the place had issues. So how will these teams fair in finding evidence? Or as we’ve come to see, will they even find evidence?

First we have Northeastern Spirit Society who already sound like a bunch of goofs that argue more than they work together. And that’s just during their team intro. Once again the attitude is completely unnecessary and just doesn’t need to be there.

When it comes to the investigation these teams start making the usual amateur mistakes. West Virginia Paranormal gets lost and can’t find the psych ward and Jordan needs to ditch the damn gum. Who the hell chews gum when you’re on television? And watching these teams in action is boring. Do something more than just call out names.

Also, both teams make way too much damn noise while they work. They constantly talk and yell, "did you hear that" whenever something happens. They never just sit quietly to ask questions or get a sense of the noises that regularly occur. There was talk of some baseline measurements, but they don’t really seem to adhere to that.

Not to put a damper on the event, but to me, the only evidence they captured was the Mel Meter going off. Sure, there is a lot of activity when Jordan walks in and out of the cell, but what is that telling us? There are no EVPs to go with that, there is no other physical evidence. Basically you have a beeping box. I find that kind of weak.

As with the other episodes when it comes to the evidence reveal I feel both teams came up short. Northeastern Spirit Society presents two EVPs of "Come in" and "But they’re not" neither of which sounds like anything more than someone walking. I hear no voices there.

Next they offer up and orb and figure in the window. Sorry to offend, but orbs are stupid. As for the figure, how is that anything more than a reflection?

West Virginia Paranormal offers up "Get out prick" and "Because everybody in here is so angry". That second EVP is crap. To say there is a word in there is really reaching.

Their video evidence is just as bad with a mist and footage of the Mel Meter. How can you say footage of the Mel Meter going off is evidence?

Last weeks show gave me hope things were getting better. These two teams are just as clumsy as all the others. And does it seem like this is the first investigation any of these teams have been on? Why do they seem so confused? Why do they make so many mistakes? Why is it that every bump and bang has them freaking out and yelling "did you hear that?"

Paranormal Challenge – Ohio State Reformatory – S01E04

This was the best investigation they’ve had so far. Even though there were some obvious blunders there was a lot of activity and for the most part the teams held up well.

The main problem was Eerie Paranormal forgot to turn on the voice recorder and missed out on capturing evidence while the Mel Meter was going off. Who knows what they missed out on and it shows they were either nervous or a little unfamiliar with the technology.

Both teams heard a lot of bangs and a lot of metal on metal sounds like doors closing or something hitting the bars. One interesting item was the sound of a metal key hitting the floor. They find the key, but where did it come from? Was it in fact paranormal? Could it have been on the ground all along and one of them just happened to kick it?

On multiple occasions, Darcy from the Eerie Paranormal team says she is getting touched. Also, as Eerie Paranormal is working with the camera it suffers a power drain right as they hear noises. But you have to ask, did it really drain or did they forget to set it up correctly? They’ve had a couple of blunders so it’s hard to not think this is just negligence. Before the investigation is over they actually lose their digital recorder. They put it down and can’t find it again. Someone is wearing a ribbon of shame for that one.

As far as evidence goes they didn’t have anything that I consider to be all that solid.

For Eerie Paranormal they present an EVP of “Let’s go” and “They’re not built like us”. Their video evidence is basically two orbs floating around. I don’t like orbs so I don’t like this evidence.

Steel Town Paranormal offers up “a long loud moan” and the phrase “Gang rape … this girl” then Melanie from the team gets touched. I don’t hear that phrase at all, just fyi. And neither does Dave.

The video evidence is an orb and a shadow of someone sitting on the bench. Neither of those are really worth anything.

But before a winner is chosen the “Let’s go” of Eerie Paranormal is investigated a little further and we run into some problems. It’s not a voice from beyond at all. Unfortunately its Eerie Paranormal committing another blunder.

I thought the teams did much better this time around and there was a lot of things to pay attention to. Lots of noises even some moans. Eerie Paranormal may have committed some amateur mistakes, but at least they weren’t bickering constantly or standing around wondering what to do. But they did goof, and it cost them.

Maybe this show is getting better. What do you think? Are the teams getting better? Are they getting decent evidence? Do the teams need a refresher course before they head out?

Haunted Collector – Slaughterhouse Ghosts & Supernatural Sword – S01E06

Slaughterhouse Ghosts:

John heads out to meet with a client who claims her horse is getting scratched by an unseen force. She also hears banging and scratching on the walls of her room. She lives in a 200 year old barn and the area is known to have been the site of some battles. She also tells John that she had a wood carving, made by the previous owners’ son who met an untimely death, that she buried at the crossroads. In the house she also has some scythes and wood carvings of gargoyles.

John sends Chris and Brian to find the carving, but they don’t do much with it. They scan it with the EVP and imager but basically ignore it from then on.

While doing an EVP session they claim to get a Hungarian voice that says, “Open him”. They discover the barn was built in 1899 by a Hungarian family, and that its original role was that of a slaughterhouse. We’ve got some bad juju brewing here.

For the investigation they find a hotspot in the room which turns out to be a knife. John holds the knife and says it’s cold, but the imager shows heat signatures. John takes the knife to an expert and he explains that it’s a skinning knife and more than likely would have been used in the slaughter of animals. John takes the knife and hopes things will calm down.

I can certainly see the knife as a disturbing reminder of the past, but if there is one holdover of that time there will be dozens. The barn is hundreds of years old and stacked with “junk”. If an object was the cause of the problems saying you find the right one amidst all that is pretty wishful thinking. That would be like finding the needle in a haystack.

Supernatural Sword

John gets a letter from a client who claims her husband is under the influence of some dark things. She says he blacks out, gets scratched and has experienced things. They have separated because of it, but she wants some answers so they can try to put their lives back together.

As John shows up on the property he gets scratched. This is the same claim the owner is making. They meet with him and go over the supposed cursed objects. There are a lot of crystals, several swords, and a tiki figure in the house with a hearse in the back yard.

Beth and John check out where the swords are located and get EMF spikes off them. They look around the walls and the outside but don’t see any wires which might explain the readings. When they come back in they claim the crystals fell off the wall and hit them. Brian checks out the shelves and decides they are pretty loose and the crystals just fell. Brian says coincidence, not paranormal.

During the nighttime investigation they bring out the Ghostbox which says “upstairs”, “no”, “Zaffis” and then repeatedly says “Eric”. They asks questions and get an admission this is the spirit that scratched John and has been bothering Eric. They feel the knocks are coming from the floor so they pull up the carpet. Low and behold they find a symbol which turns out to be the Cross of Salem. The cross has been used for good, but is also linked to Aleister Crowley and his dark magic. Aimee discovers there is rumor the previous owners may have practiced dark magic. That is a whole lot of rumor and speculation and so far they have no real evidence to support that. A scratch while getting out of a car isn’t conclusive of anything.

They have a symbol drawn on the floorboards. That’s not really indicative of anything either. For all they know that could have been put there by pranksters when the house was being built. Or maybe someone superstitious put it there as a protection symbol. But John feels the swords need to go since they could have been used in ceremonies and he’ll deal with that symbol and get rid of it. Again, I think they’re jumping to conclusions. They have the rumor of rituals, swords that are ceremonial more than practical and a symbol on the floor which may or may not harmful. Lots of conjecture in this one.

And that’s it for the first season of Haunted Collector. What did you think? Are you a believer that items themselves can be haunted and causes paranormal activity in a location? Did John and his team find enough evidence to support that claim? Should be a second season of Haunted Collector?

Drop me a comment and tell me what you think.
