Paranormal Lockdown – St. Ignatius Hospital – S02E04

Related image St. Ignatius Hospital in Colfax, Washington built by the Sisters of Providence in 1893 was the only medical facility in the area. And during the 1918 flu epidemic, the halls were filled with the sick and dying. After it’s use as a hospital it became a facility for the mentally ill. It was abandoned in 2003, but staff members claim they heard screams, saw apparitions and felt the presence of others.

Nick and Katrina meet with Valore, the Colfax Executive Director, and Duane, a former employee of the hospital for 16 years. At the start, Valore explains they just saw an apparition walking the halls. They continue up to the third floor, specifically room 311, where Rose used to live. Katrina says she has problems concentrating in that room and wants to leave.

In the sitting room off to the side, we get an odd story about Valore giving a tour where visitors claim they saw a hand on the window.

Moving on, the head to the morgue. Valore tells the tale of a man who fell down the elevator shaft and died. Oddly, the elevator no longer works, so they have to exit the main building to get to it. Valore hasn’t done much in the way of upkeep so the morgue literally smells like death. It’s a putrid mess with debris and garbage strewn all over. Things are piled high and deep. Valore points out she heard voices and has been touched.

For Night one, Nick and Katrina walk the halls to get a sense of the building. The place is a wreck. The walls and ceiling are crumbling and paint is falling off. They also discover the building is riddled with bats. However, they forge ahead to room 311 to make contact with Rose. Using the Geobox they get the words, "Go away". When Nick asks who’s scratching people, they get "Rich".

For Day 2 they head to the morgue. Nick decides to climb into the bottom of the elevator shaft. He gets the word, "your voice", and then a scream, followed by "give you a warning" and another scream. The session is concluded with "Watch out".

They head upstairs to ask who might be hurt in the elevator. At the end of the hall, a mysterious plume of dust appears, like a fog machine was turned on. Nick races down the hall to see it leads to the sitting room where Valore claims people saw a hand on the glass. As they bring the day to a close, there is a loud bang and Nick says something was thrown.

For Day 3, Nick uses the spirit box and are told to go to the third floor. Once there, the box spews out all manner of words. Nick claims to hear "Illness" and "Fever" along with the name of Rose. Katrina takes the Spiritbox to Rose’s room and asks if she can come in. From here, they split up with Katrina on the first floor and Nick on the third. Katrina then says the spirits should point out their pain on Nick. It should come as no surprise that Nick immediately says he has pains in his back. Nick then lays down on a bed and basically falls asleep. Katrina and Rob have to go get him wherein Nick says he’s lost time.

For the finale, Nick and Katrina present Valore with their evidence and make a comment about Rich. Valore immediately knows who it is and shows a picture. She even says Rich was a great guy. However, Rich is supposed to be the one scratching people.

Further, from the thousands of patients, and without a last name, Valore just happens to know who the spirit was referring to and happens to have a picture handy? How shockingly convenient. What are the odds? The word setup comes to mind.

Putting that aside, what is the evidence? We have bats which would account for the screams, scratches and black mass seen moving around. The hand in the window Valore describes sounds like a prank. With enough words thrown out by the Spiritbox and Geobox, you’re bound to get something interesting. There is a big sell on a haunted elevator, and phantom pains by Nick are not evidence.

The interesting item is the plume of dust from the third floor, but that could have been a bat or bird leaping up. But, since it’s next to where they supposedly saw the "ghostly hand", it comes across as another prank. Then again, it could just be more crap falling from the ceiling.

So much of this feels like parlor tricks to sell this haunted tourist attraction.

Paranormal Lockdown – Oliver House – S02E03

Related imageThe Oliver Estate sits on 54 acres of land in Massachusetts and was built by Peter Oliver in 1769. The house was used as part of the Underground Railroad and has connections to the Sons of Liberty. It’s located on former Native American land, the tribes were victims of a plague that swept through in 1675. The house was also occupied by the Sproat family, who lost three of their children to illness. The township of Middleboro currently owns the estate and use it as a tourist attraction.

As soon as Katrina see the house she says something is off and they’re being watched. They meet with Leilani who directed the project to save the house. She wants to know if the house is safe for visitors.

On the tour, Katrina says she feels layers of people. Upstairs, she glimpses little feet in the adjacent room and that something is holding her hand.

Downstairs they are shown the entrance to the Underground Railroad and the false room where the Oliver family would have hidden during the turbulent times of the Revolution.

For Day 1, as they set up their equipment, Nick sees something out of the corner of his eye. After following, he feels static energy on the stairs and then a hand reaching for his neck. The Geobox comes through with the words, "I’m here" and Nick feels as though something is pushing him while on the stairs. This leads them to the basement where they get the word, "Shh" twice. At the end of the night, Katrina feels as though something woke her up and she expected to find someone down by her feet.

For Day 2, Nick wants to investigate the woods. He and Katrina both feel there is something ominous about them and feel watched as they look around. Rob, the camera man, says he hears drums as they try to make contact.

That night, Katrina goes back to the nursery where Nick brings out the 3D mapping software. Like the previous episode, a small figure appears and moves close to Katrina.

For Day 3, Nick brings out an Infrasound generator which sounds like a gas powered generator. This is supposed to help the spirit energy and Rob claims to smell gunpowder as soon as it was turned on. The Geobox gives them the word "upstairs" as well as "something is dead" and "all the spirits". Nick claims to see a black mass moving around and both he and Katrina hear footsteps and bangs.

Nick sets up another 3D mapping experiment to make contact with the Sproat children. As he stands in the hall, a small figure appears to latch itself to him and climb up his body. Nick explains he is overcome with emotion and feelings.

Katrina notes there is a black anomaly on the screen which Nick decides to follow. Katrina heads toward the kitchen and ultimately outside claiming she has an emotional connection to the land.

At the end, they meet with Leilani and confirm the house is haunted. Nick has no doubt, but says it’s not malicious. Katrina says the woods are tried to the activity and hold in the emotions.

It’s a rather firm conviction even though most of the evidence is personal experiences. Most of it stems from the 3D mapping which has a track record of producing small stick figures. A lot of influence comes from the Native American land, which has become the fall back story these days.

And it’s better to have a haunted tourist attraction than just a tourist attraction.

Paranormal Lockdown – Kreischer Mansion – S01E06

image From their previous episode, Nick and Katrina visit another house in New York, the Kreischer Mansion, built around 1885. There have been a couple of tragic events, such as the shooting death of Edward Kreischer as well as mafia related murder where a man was strangled, stabbed, drowned and then incinerated in the furnace. There are actually news stories related to the mafia hit, so details of that story might be true. That happened in 2006 so these two events are decades and decades apart.

However, people claim the house has a darker past than that. As was the common practice of the time, seances were held in the house in an attempt to contact the departed spirit of Edward. Some believe this portal to the other side is still open, letting in evil spirits.

Some of the activity experienced includes a stabbing sensation, the figure of a dark woman and the feeling of being touched. It is said, the figure of the women seems to be handing out a warning, but about what remains unknown.

As they start the investigation, Nick and Katrina feel cold spots and a static charge like electricity. Katrina says she feels a pain in her back and feels something touch her elbow. Nick feels he smells sulphur coming from the house and gets the words, "I’m Edward Kreischer", "Hi Katrina", "I’m dead" and "murder" from the Geobox. As the culmination of all this, Nick gets a stabbing pain in the leg. They’ve also had a couple batteries die which they feel are feeding this entity.

The next day, they start off in the basement by taking some pictures and show just how easy it is to cast a mysterious shadow on the wall. They supposedly hear the cots being moved as well as more batteries mysteriously drain. While in one of the rooms, Katrina says something was thrown and she hears loud knocks.

For the final day, Nick and Katrina will conduct their own seance with the help of Colleen Costello. During the event, Nick grows ice cold and feels a pain along his back. On their devices, they feel they get the words, "I’m sorry" and "I’m coming downstairs".

Their goal is to close they portal they feel has been letting spirits in. And it seems all you have to do is ask the spirits to go the light and they will leave. No gusts of wind, no resisting voices, no candles getting blown out. Just tell the spirits to follow the light and everything will be fine.

While the house looks impressive and if restored, would be amazing, I fail to see how this place is haunted. I have no confidence in that Geobox as Nick is the only one that hears anything from it. An old house, that’s been abandoned for a few years has loud and odd knocks in it? Well, who knew that sort of thing would happen? The dreams that Katrina has about figures giving her a warning – come on, what else are you going to dream about after hearing all those stories?

To be honest, the history and legacy of this house doesn’t exactly fit with the "rampant paranormal activity" claims. We have two grim events to be sure, but this house doesn’t seem all that active really. Yes, they both make comments about aches and pains, but those sorts of personal experiences are subjective. Everyone has had phantom pains and the like. That’s not evidence that defies all normal explanation.

But there it is, the final episode of the very short first season of Paranormal Lockdown. They picked a few interesting places to visit and while I don’t think it helped their credibility to have Grant Wilson show up on the scene, it’s good to see Nick and Kristina back on the paranormal circuit.

Paranormal Lockdown – Hinsdale House – S01E05

image Nick and Katrina head to northwestern New York to investigate a crumbling wreck of a house that is supposedly a hot spot for all sorts of paranormal goings on. It doesn’t take long to get an Amityville vibe from this place.

There are claims that a woman was hanged in a nearby tree, that a young box was killed by a buzzsaw and that one man turned and murdered his brother. But those are events connected with the area, not specifically with the house.

As we get started, we are told an exorcism has been performed on the house itself. Tim Shaw, a Medium, gives a tour stating he’s not a fan of the place. He shows off one of the bedrooms where flies gather in the window. Katrina says she feels a pressure on her chest. Both Katrina and Tim say they need to go outside to get away from the negative energy in there.

Another visitor, Tony Spera, comes to discuss the house. Tony is a demonologist and son-in-law to Lorraine Warren. Yes, indeed, there is a connection to Amityville as Lorraine has investigated the house and was part of the exorcism back in 1974. Lorraine has bad feelings about the house and there is another connection to local Native American burial grounds.

Also at the exorcism was Paul Kenyon. He claims to have seen a woman lurking in the house and he’s not a fan of the house either.

As the investigation starts, Katrina heads down to the basement where she captures heavy breathing and someone asking, "Where’s Nick?" She also captures, "Get out" when asking if someone plans to do them harm. It’s also during these early stages when Nick feels something scratch him.

It was Nick’s goal to sleep in Mary’s room, the one with all the flies, but there are overpowering oppressive feelings and he simply can’t do it. Instead, he sleeps just outside in the hall.

For the next day, the head out to look around the grounds. Their intent is to find the tree that could have been used for the alleged hanging. Katrina asks if the house is forbidden and gets a faint, "Yes" in response. While out in the woods, Nick hears chanting, but no one else seems to. But their exploration is cut short as they hear the cry of coyotes.

On the last night, they decide to stay up all night. Nick goes into Mary’s room while Katrina heads out into the woods again. Nick hears bangs and knocks and begins to get frustrated or agitated, not sure which. He starts asking question about death and the afterlife and says he gets the answer, "There’s no heaven" on the recorder. This seems to unsettle him greatly. Not much is happening out in the woods, but Katrina is brought back to the house by Nick screaming. Apparently his sleep deprivation is catching up to him.

When Katrina gets back to the house, he seems out of sorts and says he hears all sorts of mumbling and voices. He looks quite disoriented and confused.

Katrina is quite convinced that they made contact with something non-human and that it followed Nick home from the investigation. He was repeatedly woken up at 3am and kept hearing knocking sounds down in his basement.

An interesting house, but in the end, what do we walk away with? If we look at the different pieces, we have a rather broken down house with some sanitary issues. Who knows what sort of effect that would have. There are some voices captured on EVP that might be handing out warnings, but alas, there was no shadow figure, no demonic belching, they aren’t swarmed by the flies, the voices aren’t telling Nick to do something terrible and in general there isn’t a whole lot to support all these claims.

Feelings are one thing, but that can be caused by a multitude of factors. Has the house and grounds been tested for lead, gasses, mold, fungus? What about making sure the place is level so it doesn’t give that fun house effect people used to talk about? And let’s not forget, Nick is sleep deprived which is clearly going to cause odd behavior and have side effects.

It is interesting to note the connections between this house, it’s cast of characters and Amityville because it doesn’t take too many searches to find that investigation hangs under a heavy cloud of suspicion and doubt.

And exactly how many Native American connections will these paranormal shows make?
